Ivica Kostelic

Olympic medalist

Ivica Kostelic (born 23 November 1979 in Zagreb) is a Croatian skier and Janica Kostelic's elder brother. His chief discipline is slalom skiing.

After having considerable success in children's and junior competitions, he fought against injuries through most of his career. Ivica Kostelic has had a total of 7 World Cup victories in slalom and the best overall position he has ever reached is number 7 during seasons 01/02 and 02/03. He placed ninth in giant slalom in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, while one of his greatest achievements is the gold medal in slalom during the 2003 World Ski Championships in St. Moritz.

On 14 February 2006, he won a silver medal at the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, in the Men's Combined. When he was lying in the bed after knee surgery, and his doctors said it would be miracle if he would walk again, he said, "I will be back. My dream is the Olympic medal."

Ivica Kostelic is recognized as great sportsman among other skiers. After winning one race, at the end of the press conference where every question was for him, he stopped reporters from leaving, saying he cannot believe that none of them asked any questions to Giorgio Rocca, who came third that race. "I am very privileged to be sitting here with him", said Ivica.
