About the Ski Resort
Coppervale Ski Hill is located on the southern edge of the Lassen National Forest where the Sierra Nevada, the Cascades, the Modoc Plateau, and the Great Basin meet. Though the area is heavily logged and many parts of it have been clear-cut, when the snow flies there are ample opportunities to enjoy the hillsides and backcountry. Coppervale is owned and operated by Lassen Community College and it's quite possibly the friendliest ski area in California. It's also a hill where, as Norm Wilson, the hill's operator likes to say, “kids can go to stay out of trouble.” Wilson, who first learned to ski on the hill, has been running it for 17 years. As a favor to the community and to the college, Wilson maintains the lifts, hand-shovels lift lines when there's not enough snow, and side slips the hill when there's not enough coverage to drag the groomer. He also teaches snowboarding, while his brother-in-law teaches skiing. There are no rentals available on the hill, but shops in Susanville can set you up. The poma lift used at Coppervale was purchased from Alpine Meadows and retrofitted for steep terrain
