About the Ski Resort
Mont Ripley Ski hill is operated by Michigan Tech University. This small area provides the skier with a comfortable chalet featuring a cafeteria and lockers as well as a ski shop and ski school. The area is also well known for its professional National Ski Patrol unit.
Mont Ripley is located on Michigan Highway 26, approximately 1/2 mile east of the vertical lift bridge that connects Houghton and Hancock. The ski area is located in the Keweenaw Peninsula, rich in copper mining history, and sits adjacent to the Keweenaw National Historic Park. Beginning as well as advanced skiers will find Mont Ripley ideally suited to their needs. Runs range from 2,000 to 2,500 feet with a 423-foot vertical drop that provides plenty of challenge for the advanced skier, while beginners can take advantage of the midway unloading station, where the descent is wide and gentle. Two new runs were added in 1992. Lookout is more difficult while Racer's Ridge appeals to the intermediate skier. The year 1993 saw the completion of Bonsai, a very difficult and narrow mogul-filled run, which brings Ripley's total to 12 exciting and challenging runs. The entire east side of the area is now lighted for night skiing with more improvements planned for the future.
