About the Ski Resort
For over sixty years Mt. Peter Ski Area has quietly built a reputation as "The Friendly One." Nestled along the Appalachian Trail in historic Warwick, New York, Mt. Peter is one of the three oldest ski areas in the state. This resort has developed a tradition of fine skiing, family fun, and personal service that has kept customers returning season after season for over half a century. Mt. Peter was founded in the 1930s by a group of investors affiliated with R. H. Macy's Department Store. These early investors recognized the potential of this quaint site and its strategic location in the densely populated metropolitan area. In the beginning there was only a rope tow and skiing was dependent on daylight and natural snow. However, skiing has changed over the years and Mt. Peter has responded to those changes. During the 1960's the first major expansion of Mt. Peter occurred. For the first time, skiers were treated to the comfort and luxury of a double chair lift. The magic of lights for night skiing and a new base lodge extended the hours of operation and the amenities between runs. Mt. Peter was also one of the first resorts in the area to use snowmaking to insure better ski conditions. In 1971 Don Sampson, then the Mt. Peter Ski School Director, purchased the resort and, along with his wife Gail, continues to operate and manage it today. Hard working, enthusiastic and dedicated to the ski business, the Sampsons had a vision for Mt. Peter. They implemented the second major expansion by adding a second chair lift. They tripled the size of the base lodge, and included a country tavern and rental shop. Snowmaking capacity was increased. By planting over 17,000 pine trees-with their own hands-they redesigned the trails and landscaping of the entire complex.
