About the Ski Resort

The first major ski resort in western Pennsylvania, Laurel Mountain was once owned & operated by General Richard King Mellon as a private resort for the Rolling Rock Club. It was operated as such until 1958.

From 1958 until 1962 the Mellon family ran the resort as both a private and public area. In 1962 the property was given to the state of Pennsylvania and annexed as part of the park system.

A series of concessionaries operated Laurel Mountain between 1962 and 1989. Insufficient water supply for snow making and insufficient snow making machinery along with a lack of mother nature's cooperation, led to the ski resorts closure in 1989.
