About the Ski Resort
Whitetail Ridge Recreation Area encompasses 200 acres, with approximately 30 acres developed for ski slopes. The majority of the costs for development of Whitetail Ridge and subsequent improvements were paid for using non-appropriated funds.
The facility is open to members of the Fort McCoy community, and the public has had access to these facilities, on a space-available basis, since the mid-1970s. The facility also is used for training military personnel in downhill and cross-country skiing techniques. The recreation area is maintained by the Business Activities Division of the Directorate of Human Resources and Community Services. Depending upon weather conditions, Whitetail Ridge is operational from approximately December through March.
Downhill skiers will find groomed and lighted slopes equipped with mechanical lifts. The vertical drop of the slope is 185 feet. Four ski runs ? two of more than 1,300 feet, one exceeding 1,000 feet, and one 300 feet ? cater to skiers of novice through experienced-intermediate skill levels.
The facility is recognized by the National Ski Patrol, and members of the Ski Patrol monitor activity on the slopes to promote safe skiing and to attend to injured skiers.
